Overview
The goal of this study is to see if anemia during pregnancy can be treated by Vitamin C supplementation, as it has been shown to affect the body’s metabolism of iron in a positive manner.
Study Information
The study is conducted with 200 participants, between the ages of 18 and 50 years old all of whom are pregnant women. The women are divided into two groups. Group 1 will be given one iron pill a day plus 500 mg of Vitamin C twice a day until they give birth. Group 2 will be given one iron pill a day plus a placebo twice a day until they give birth.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Must be less than 20 0/7 weeks pregnant
- Pregnant with a single baby
- Has iron deficiency anemia
- Plans to deliver at Miami Valley Hospital
Exclusion Criteria:
- Currently takes greater than 150 mg of Vitamin C
- Has diabetes or another chronic disease
- Has or is discovered to have hemoglobinopathy
- Has a known metabolic disease that may impair iron absorption
- Fetus is known to have abnormalities
- Is participating in another intervention trial
- Engages in drug or alcohol abuse
